Hermon encourages each project Home to develop local support and income to discourage long-term foreign dependency. This often includes donated goods and services from local business and governmental agencies, such as food, health care and clothing. This may also include working with the projects to start one or more small business, with additional investment being contingent upon the success of those business.
These businesses serve purposes other training programs, for example, can generate income while also providing the children with useful skills that will enable them to find employment as adults or start their own business. In Hosur, a farm adjacent to the Children’s home with cows, poultry, and sheep generates food for the home as well as income, and the children learn useful skills when they help in the farm on Saturdays. In Krishnagiri, the girls engage themselves in envelope making and tailoring. Here they learn various patterns of stitching and embroidery making. We anticipate helping some of them pursue a higher education while helping others set up their own business.
